Reflection

To be honest, I have learned many things about English. The level of writing essay in university is different with high school level. Ms. Thivilojana had taught us the steps of writing a good essay. My first essay was “Parents are important than friends”. I had prepared a mind map as my pre-writing. Then, I started to write an essay regarding the topic I chosen. Finally, I added some references on the last page of my essay.

We also had our first oral presentation as English project. The topic that Ms. Thivilojana gave us was “Ancient Modern Wonders of The World”. Our group had chosen Oriental Pearl TV Tower as the building we present. We arranged our jobs right before finding information, then video shooting our presentation in an empty class. We then burnt it into a CD, and submitted to Ms. Thivilojana.

When I was in high school, I did not care much about English, as long I can speak in English. But when I came to university, I realized that English is not only usable in common speaking, but in society and whole global. Currently, I am studying on how to overcome the fear of speaking English properly with each other. I am sure that learning a good English will help us grow in society.

Reading and Listening

Besides essay and oral presentation, we have also learnt reading and listening skills in English class. Reading and listening skills are important in our essay and presentation.

Reading can improve our language and help us find important points in the article easily. Sometimes we have issue on understanding the article because we do not know what they are trying to show us. If we learn how to read, we can understand the important points in the article or essay.

Listening can make us concentrate on the things that people trying to say. Listening makes us communicate well with others because we focus on the talk. Therefore, reading and listening skills are significant in our future.

Oral Presentation

We had an oral presentation for our first project. This presentation is a group project, so, we have to cooperate together to give a good presentation. Our group did Oriental Pearl TV Tower for the presentation. We had searched some information such as the historical or background of the building, the structure, the type of ornamentation, and the type of materials that use to build the building.

Finding information is easy, but presenting is the most difficult part to do. Some of us have problem to present due to the lack of confidence. We were too afraid to stand out and gave a talk because we did not have enough practice in our communication skills in daily life. However, we managed to overcome our fear by practise in front of the mirror. Finally, our presentation went smooth without any problem. In this presentation, i really learned a lot such as the importance of team work and presenting skills, and eye contact to the audience. Although it was a hard time, but i had fun before and during presentation.

Essay Writing

In English class, our English lecturer, Ms.Thivilojana taught us on how to write an essay. I learned that essay in university is different with high school. In university, we have to do pre-writing before writing a complete essay. Pre-writing is a draft of ideas that we put in our essay. There are many types of pre-writing which includes free writing, questioning, making a list, clustering, and preparing scratch outline. After pre-writing, our essay must contain thesis statement, topic sentences, supporting paragraphs, and conclusion. Besides that, some quotes, tradition words, and phrases can be add in our essay to make it perfect.

A Trip to Janda Baik

On March 1st, my course mates and I went to Janda Baik as our project to gain some experiences in buildings and environment. Janda Baik is a small Malay village which located in Pahang that uses around 45 minutes journey from Taylor’s Lakeside Campus. We had visited many different places which were beautiful and unique.

Janda Baik is a peaceful and comfortable place to relax in. I had a lot of fun visiting this nice place because it can help me calm my mind and release all my stress. I am also happy that I could learn many types of buildings which related to my course :)
