Mathematics Assignment 2

The purpose of doing Mathematics assignment 2 is to help us on understanding the method of carrying out surveys, plotting column bars and pie charts, and making data of the daily life of people. I was in a group with Lee Qian Ying, Vicky Lee Wei Kee, Ricky Wong, Felicia Tiong, and Sean Wee to complete our task. We had to compare the healthy lifestyle of people in Malacca and Klang Valley and made a statistic as comparison on both healthy lifestyles in different location.

Before we went to a trip to Malacca for the assignment, we had to think of few questions and put them into our survey forms. After the trip, we went to Klang Valley to continue our surveys. Then, we constructed them into grouped-data, as well as designed pie charts and column bars. Lastly, we had to make it into a report and submitted to our maths lecturer.

On my reflection of this assignment, I never thought that I can actually get to apply the use of statistic in real life. It was a tough time that we had to think of questions that related to statistics. However, I enjoyed the moment we gave out the survey forms together. This assignment was challenging yet fun.

Assignment 2: Illustrations or Drama Scripts

Aims and Accomplishments
The learning outcome of this second assignment is to have the ability to explain the basic ideas of workplace communication. Moreover, giving examples of working communication by drawing comics are also a good idea of understanding the concepts more clearly.

I formed a group with Esther Lim Qiu Qiu, Tan Zi Qin, Dulcie Chin Nieh Shy Torng, and Teh Kuan Yon. We chose Workplace Communication as our chapter and draw 3 comics based on the small topics we found in the chapter.

Reflection
This is a fun assignment I had in those I had. This is because I had a chance to discuss the storylines with my group members, and draw the comics together. I like to colour the comics as I think that it is a fun job to do.

I really learn a lot in Effective Public Communication class. I have collected much knowledge about communication skills, so that I can use them in real life situations. I have to thank Mr. Nathaniel Woon to teach me such interesting module.

Assignment 1: Individual Essay

Aims and Accomplishments
The learning outcome of this assignment is to understand the basic ideas in the chosen topic and relate it to the respective theories associated with the topic as taught in the course with reference to the texts listed. Furthermore, it makes the students to master the topic they choose and able to express this in the form of an academic essay with proper APA citations and referencing.

For this assignment, we had to choose one topic based on the questions in the brief, and write an essay for about 800 – 1000 words. So, I chose to write an essay to explain why our society might especially need to improve communication between and among people.

Reflection
Throughout all of the assignment I had in Sem 2, this is the most difficult assignment I ever had. However, it helps me to study more about the topic I chose. I tried to find some details from internet and books in the library, and spend some time to understand all of them. After the assignment, I can improve more on my communications skills with my course mates.

Class Test

Aims and accomplishments
The intended learning outcomes of this test is to understand and illustrate the concepts of Effective Public Communication by some daily observations and occurrences.

In this class test, it was containing chapter 1 to 5 in “Human Communication” by Pearson et al., together with chapter 6 Conflict and Negotiation in “Human Communication” by Tubbs and Mossom. We also had to write an essay for about 200 words based on one of the movies and short clips we watched before the day of the class test. The movies and short clips we had to choose were “The Joy Luck Club”, “The Bridget Jones’ Diary”, “The Secret of Body Language”, “Listen Listen Listen” on YouTube, and “Negotiation by William Mury”. Our class test venue was at Lecture Theater 8 from 7pm to 9pm.

Reflection

After the class test, I had learnt more about Human Communication. The lecture notes I got from our lecturer, Mr. Nathaniel Woon was much easy to understand than just reading the textbook. Besides that, the movies and short clips also helped me recognize more information of Human Communication in daily observations. When it came to the essay part, I had to recall back all the movies so that I could think which one I would use in the essay. This test really gave me a chance to study more about the concepts I learn in class.

Reflective Essay of Basic Accounting

I did not learn about accounting before, because it looks so complicated and strange, which I never thought that it is actually fun to learn. I studied many new things I have never learned in secondary school. Like the first topic I learn, accounting is known as a language of business. It is a tool which is used by stakeholders.

The P&L Statement is my most favorite topic in the module. It this topic, I have to state the revenue, cost of goods sold, and the expenses used in a business. Revenue is the money we earn in the sales, and it is necessary to be placed at the highest position; while expense is the money we spend in the business, and it is necessary to be placed at the lowest position. After that, I have to find the net profit the business got. I found it easy to understand and master it as I just have to follow the question given.

The Balance Day Adjustment is my least favorite topic in this module. It is difficult to handle the accurate position of the revenues and expenses into the double entry. Depreciation is also hard for me to understand. I always forgot that depreciation expenses do not involve in cash payment to the suppliers, and it confused me.

The Basic Accounting is useful in the future if a quantity surveyor. This module is the most tricky one I ever had in Semester 2. I need to understand and master it well so that I can use it in business.

Concepts Used in FNBE Charity Drive Event

We were having a charity drive event from 11th to 15th November in Taylor’s Lakeside Campus. The purpose of having this event was to teach us on how to make a plan and strategies on our business with lots of creativities.

However, this business did not only involve in Introduction to Business module, but also involves in Basic Accounting module. This charity drive event had taught me how to make a decision. It also helps me to evaluating business performance. Besides that, this event helps me understand the meaning of discharging accountability. It ensure that the business, its owners and employees will carry out their duties in a honest and responsible manner.

Reflection on Introduction to Business

Everyone said that business is fun to learn, but I did not believe it at the first time. After the approach at Introduction to Business module, I find that it actually is good and fun to learn. I never thought that one day I will be learning this. This module helps me to understand the way to start a business, the attitudes and personalities a businessman should have, and experience the real business in campus.

The topic I like the most is “Managing a Business”. It says that a businessman needs to make a management process to reduce the chance of business failure. The management process has four components, which are plan, organize, lead, and control. The reason I like this topic is because it teaches me how to make a management process carefully, and it explains the meaning of the four components. I learn that we have to set our goal, then develop the strategy, and finally determine the tactics if we want to make a plan. I also understand that organizing is based on the concept of division of labor or job specialization. Besides that, I know that there are various types of leadership styles which can make a leader guides and motivates the workers. Finally, I studied that control is a process that monitoring a firm’s performance to ensure that it is meeting its goals.

To conclude, this module makes me had a lot of fun in the class. It was the best module I ever had in my Semester 2. I especially really enjoyed the charity drive event, because it gave me the chances to communicate with team members, and experience selling products for the first time.

Charity Drive Event

Our final project for the Introduction to Business module is a Charity Drive event. It was held from 11th to 15th November in Taylor’s Lakeside Campus. The goal of this project was to raise RM2000 for the SPCA Selangor, Malaysia via cactuses, T-shirts, button badges, and merchandises of SPCA. So my team members included Lee Qian Ying, Vicky Lee, Felicia Tiong, and Liu Chia Niu, a total of 5 people in a team.

Leading Your People

The role-play is about a teacher teaches the students in a boring method. His students are playing and sleeping in class, not listening to his class. After he knows that his teaching method is boring, he changes his attitude, and his students start to focus in his class. The concept that is relevant to this role-play is Personalities, Attitudes, and Motivations.

The Ratio Analysis Report

The purpose of the report is to analyze the profitability and financial stability of the Walmart during the year 2012 – 2013 periods. According to the analysis I and Sharon Chow Ci Yung had done, we do not recommended the shares of the company be purchased for investment purpose.

Reflection of Principles of Economics

At the first time I learnt Principles of Economics, I thought that it was difficult for me to understand about marketing since I had not studied economics before. However, I started to realize that it was actually fun to study it. I learnt many new things in the class, and it was interesting to try and understand our marketing in Malaysia.

I choose Price Theory (Part 1) as my favorite topics. Price Theory (Part 1) – Demand taught me that the quantity demanded becomes lower and vice versa when the price of the products has increase. I liked these topics is because they are easy to understand and learn. To give an example of these topics, a beef noodle shops has increase their price of noodles and this fact causes them getting lesser customers.

As my least favorite topics, I will choose Theory of Firm Production & Cost as it. This topic is about The Law of Diminishing Returns and Costs in the Long Run. I think that it is hard to master this topic. Sometimes I could not catch up on the topic that my lecturer taught. But I then tried to learn it with the help of my friends. And finally, I managed to overcome the difficulty of it.

To conclude, I enjoyed learning Principles of Economics. The most enjoyable experience I had in the class was the time playing monopoly game with my classmates. The purpose of playing this game was to understand better of the topic Monopoly. I am happy that I am able to learn this subject in campus. With the help of lecturer and friends, I can managed to study more of this topic.

Melaka Trip Assignment

In this assignment, we had interviewed a hotel named Hotel Selectstar in Melaka and another hotel named Reumz Hotel in Klang Valley. This video will gives us the life history of the hotels, the markets, and the competitors they are facing.

Class Assignment 4: Research Report

Aims and Accomplishments
The learning outcome of this research assignment is to demonstrate conduct a well research report with correct format and referencing techniques due to correctly identify their roles when speaking and delivering the information fluently and effectively to target audience.

As this was our final assignment, we had to make a research on 3 business shops at different places. Our group had chosen tailoring industry, and so we had to interview on the 3 tailoring shops we picked. Then, we had to prepare a research report with 2500 – 3000 words and a verbal presentation of 10 – minute length.

Reflections
We gave many efforts to this assignment as this was the last assignment we had in English module class. I learned on how to prepare a well – written report for a research interview. Plus, our group had also produced a video of the verbal presentation to Mr. Nathaniel Woon.

I can say that, I enjoyed this English class very much, because I can improve my English speaking skills and writing skills. I remembered that, Mr. Woon had prohibited us to speak other language besides English. It was hard to get use of it, but time flows by, and I started to speak English more in his class. Now, I can speak English more fluently and accurately with my friends. It was all thanks to Mr. Nathaniel Woon.

Class Assignment 3: Debate

Aims and Accomplishments
The learning outcome of this debate is to improve the speaking skills and courage of students as students will face these issues in future society. Moreover, debate helps students to develop decisive awareness and advance the concentration on a topic.

In this assignment, we had a debate in English class. Teoh Hui Yu, Esther Lim Qiu Qiu, and I had formed a group for the debate. Our chosen topic was “The endless debate on the usage of English for the teaching of Science and Mathematics in schools is a total waste of time”. Our group was a forth group, and I was doing a conclusion in my group.

Reflections
This assignment is the toughest assignment I ever had in this semester. This was my first time having a debate, and I was at first confused with all of the technique of debate, like a lost little lamb. However, my friends gave me some advice, and we managed to overcome the confusion of debating. This debate has gives me a chance to upgrade my speaking skills and courage when I need to speak to someone. It also helps me to concentrate more on something important.

Class Assignment 2: Compare or Contrast Essay

Aims and Accomplishments
The learning outcome of the second assignment is to observe to movies and understand the “language” of the actions and objectives they have in the movies. Besides that, it also helps students to build their ability of compare and contrast on two similar genre but different movies, make the students state the information they get in clear and proper language.

In this assignment, we were requested to compare or contrast any 2 genres (science fiction or romance comedy), and pick 2 movies based on the genre we had chosen. I chose science fiction as my genre, and "The Hunger Games" and "Tron: Legacy" as my movies. Science fiction movies are my favorite, because they contain a lot of scientific technologies and some amazing actions.

The Hunger Games

Tron: Legacy

Reflections
After this assignment, I can compare and contrast two similar things in a better way. Before, I was weak in comparing things, and I was having issue on stating the differences of the similar things. However, I can do comparing and contrasting easily once I completed this assignment. I had also learnt the technique of writing a compare or contrast essay.

Class Assignment 1: Observing the Familiar (Tool)

Aims and Accomplishments
The intended learning outcomes of this assignment is to help students to have ability of observing the item and situations clearly, and write a descriptive about it. For this assignment, we have to pick one tool in our house and observe it using our five senses (listen, sight, touch, smell, taste), then write an essay about it. I had chosen a plastic mug as my tool, because sharp and dangerous tools such as knife are not allowed to be observed.

Example of plastic mug

When I started my observations, I stared at the plastic mug, looking at it in different angles, smelling at it, listening to it, and touch it with my hands. After many hours of the observations, I observed many things that I usually do not notice at, and I quickly jotted the observations down in a piece of paper.

Reflections

In my real life, I did not notice different things that I used, or things that I saw in my surroundings. However, I can observe everything carefully using my free time. Nowadays, I will observe the mini cacti I bought when I feel bored. Due to this assignment, my observation skills have been improved.

Assignment 3: Video Clips

We were requested to make a video clips which includes 5 concepts that was learnt in class. This assignment was also a group assignment. So, my group members included Lim Pui Yee, Tan Kai Zhong, and Lim Zhen Wei. Besides making video clips, we had to prepare a report for this video.

After accomplishing this assignment, I got to learnt more concepts that was taught in class and recognized more details of them.

Assignment 2: Comic Strips

We were divided in groups to accomplish this 2nd assignment. My group members were Teoh Hui Yu, Sean Wee, and Max Teo. Our task was to select some concepts from the concepts on chapters we studied in class and draw comics using these concepts.

The reflection of this assignment is, I can understand which concepts people are using when I observe them carefully.

This is one of our comics:
Classical Conditioning

Assignment 1: Journals

For this assignment, we were required to do journals based on the concepts in chapter 1 to 6 we learnt in class. The purpose of doing this assignment is to let us able to apply the accurate concepts for our journals and understand the human behavior in life.

After this assignment had been done, I realized that the concepts I learnt can be seen in human life. By understanding the concepts of social psychology, I can change the negative sides of myself and study on how to interact with people.

Accounting task 1

We had a first class task in our accounting class. We had to find some answers for the questions that our lecturer gave. Our questions were: 1) who are the owners / shareholders? 2) Why would they read the accounting report of a report? 3) Provide one example to illustrate your explanation.

After the task, I learnt more about the meaning of owners and the things they will do in accounting.

Economics class task 2

In Economics class task 2, we had to identify the supply curve for mobile phones as its manufacturing technology has become more efficient.

As the same before, we made a discussion for this task and found that the supply curve will shift to right. If the manufacturing technology has become more efficient, the amount of mobile phones produced will increase, therefore the supply curve will move to right.

This task makes me understand the meaning of supply curve more when it comes to various situations.

this is the video of the class task 2:

Economics class task 1

For the class task 1, we had to show the shifts in the demand curve for steak sold at Ali’s Steakhouse as residents surrounding his restaurant have moved elsewhere.

Through the discussion, we had the same opinion that the demand curve will shift to left. The reason was that, if the residents that live surrounding his restaurant have moved to elsewhere, Ali’s customers will get less and less, thus its demand curve of steak shifts to left.

In this task, I can identify the demand curve and the movement of the curve more easily.

Mathematics assignment 1

For our first assignment, i teamed up with four members (Felicia Tiong, Lee Qian Ying, Vicky Lee, and Ricky Wong) to complete this assignment.

In order to find out the total surface area and the volume of an object given in the question paper, we had a small discussion when having a break. The first step to do was, we used the Law of Sines to find the angle of part of a triangle on combined circle, and get the area of segment.

Inside the object, there was a prism-shaped. We tried to find the length of the prism and get the area of it. Next, we had to find the area of cylinder (2πr² x 2πrh), then added all of the areas we found together to obtain the total surface area of the object.

Finally, we found the volume of the prism and cylinder. These are our calculation:

After the calculation, we then constructed the object.

In this assignment, I found that I can solve the trigonometry and the area and volume of an object more easily. I was once weak at finding in areas and volumes when it came to a rather difficult-shaped object. However, I can solve it calmly and without any struggle.
